Sketches Cont.

So the preferred dragon heads and bodies had similar shapes and styles, so I ran with them and focused more on design. These are all very general, but I hope to get more concrete, detailed designs in the next pass once I figure out a direction. Crit away!

  1. I think these are all great! Personally, I like Head 3 and Body 9. The head has a more heroic feel and kinda a sun like appeal. That goes the same for Body 9. Great work Liz!

  2. I agree with Stephen. Head 3 is very heroic. I also like the wings of #2. They are the most like they are made of fire while at the same time aren't super long. And I'm partial to body #8 as well. I like the sleek scales. I wonder if there is a way to keep the sleekness and the fire motif at the same time. I'm still in awe of how fast you are making these, and iterating on them. Awesome stuff!

One last thing. I hope this isn't too late in the design process to say this, but the way the game is currently set up, the player will always be in a sort of chase camera. As such, there probably won't be a lot of the front of the dragon being seen. Most of the time, the player will be looking at the back of the dragon's head.

There is a way this could be changed. My original plan was to have a hud-less screen for the game, but when the idea of chasing cloud creatures came up, we couldn't think of a good way to indicate where off-screen creatures were. Perhaps we could have the dragon's head point in the direction the player is supposed to go. That would require some tricks with matching animation with direction vectors, but it's something to think about.

I'll post some of the design ideas the team came up with at our last meeting with Rachael some time soon, when it isn't 3 in the morning.

  3. woo shiny stuff! random bits from a few that I liked:
wings- I like the wings on body #2, the part of them I guess you'd call the hands look firey and awesome.
body- I like body #8 as well, pretty much what was stated above about the sleekness, fits well.
head- I like head #11, looks fierce but not sinister(though if we change our minds and want an evil dragon, -9 is clearly the way to go), the horns also look good on it.
